Health- the link between oceans, soils & humans

How Ocean Purpose Project's groundbreaking Eco-Gardening for Seniors programme is showing Singapore it is possible to have a holistic approach to ageing with grace, food resilience and medicinal innovation through our oceans bounty.

Singapore’s reliance on imported food—over 90% of its supply—underscores the nation’s vulnerability in a world increasingly affected by supply chain disruptions and climate change. The Eco-Gardening for Seniors initiative by the Ocean Purpose Project (OPP) addresses this challenge with a multi-pronged approach that enhances local food resilience, promotes sustainable agriculture, and harnesses the untapped potential of seaweed and medicinal plants from Ayurvedic, Jamu and TCM donated cuttings from our Pasir Ris residents. This program is not only a blueprint for sustainable urban agriculture but also a catalyst for groundbreaking developments in medicinal innovation and community health.

Building Resilience Through Local Food Production

As part of Singapore’s "30 by 30" goal to produce 30% of its nutritional needs locally by 2030, eco-gardening empowers seniors to become active contributors to the nation’s food security. It is important for Ocean Purpose Project that our adjoining Herb garden is not just a garden bought and paid for by landscapers but one where every brick, every gram of soil and every plant is donated by members of the community- a true community garden. By cultivating edible and medicinal plants in urban spaces, participants reduce reliance on imports, mitigate supply chain risks, and foster a deeper connection to sustainable food systems.

This effort also aligns with global calls for a transition to sustainable nutrient management. Eco-gardening utilizes organic fertilizers derived from bioremediated seaweed, an innovative solution that addresses the environmental and health issues associated with synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. Unlike synthetic options, seaweed:

Enhances soil health by improving nutrient density and moisture retention.

Reduces emissions of potent greenhouse gases like nitrous oxide (N₂O), a significant contributor to climate change.

Prevents water pollution, avoiding eutrophication and algal blooms that devastate aquatic ecosystems.

Ayurvedic, Jamu & TCM plants: From Soil to Medicine

Agriculture is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with synthetic nitrogen fertilizers accounting for a significant share. OPP’s initiative tackles this issue head-on by:

  • Replacing synthetic fertilizers with seaweed-based alternatives, reducing emissions of nitrous oxide.

  • Sequestering carbon through regenerative agricultural practices.

  • Encouraging circular economy models, where waste from one system becomes input for another.

The medicinal potential of seaweed further amplifies its impact. With compounds that exhibit antiviral, anticancer, and neuroprotective properties, seaweed bridges the gap between sustainable agriculture and cutting-edge pharmaceutical research. This dual benefit positions eco-gardening as a scalable model for urban food systems and healthcare innovation.

Central to the Eco-Gardening initiative is the cultivation of medicinal plants renowned for extensive medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. By pairing this with seaweed-based fertilizers, OPP creates a unique synergy that supports both human health and environmental sustainability.

Seaweed is a cornerstone of OPP’s Eco-Gardening initiative. It not only improves soil quality but also opens doors to the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. With bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides and polyphenols, seaweed-derived nutrients offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, enhancing the potency of medicinal plants. Drug development opportunities, as marine compounds are increasingly recognized for their pharmacological applications in addressing major diseases like cancer and cardiovascular conditions.

Engaging Seniors in a Meaningful Mission

Eco-gardening is more than a solution for food security—it’s a holistic program that empowers seniors to be stewards of sustainability while improving their physical and mental well-being. Activities such as planting, composting, and harvesting:

  • Promote physical health, improving mobility and cardiovascular function.

  • Combat loneliness, fostering social connections across diverse cultural and generational groups.

  • Encourage lifelong learning, blending traditional herbal knowledge with modern sustainable practices.

  • Through their participation, seniors actively contribute to Singapore’s food resilience and create a legacy of sustainable practices for future generations.

From Singapore to the World: A Scalable Model

The principles of OPP’s Eco-Gardening for Seniors initiative—sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and medicinal innovation—are not just relevant to Singapore but hold promise for the entire Southeast Asian region. With its emphasis on local food production and resource-efficient farming, this program is a replicable framework for other urban centers grappling with food security and environmental degradation.

The Eco-Gardening for Seniors initiative exemplifies how grassroots programs can address global challenges like food insecurity, climate change, and healthcare access. By linking ocean-derived resources like seaweed to urban agriculture and medicinal innovation, the Ocean Purpose Project demonstrates a comprehensive approach to sustainability.

This initiative offers a tangible path toward achieving Singapore’s food resilience goals while positioning the nation as a leader in sustainable urban agriculture and bio-pharmaceutical innovation. With programs like Eco-Gardening for Seniors, Singapore is not just growing food—it’s growing a healthier, more connected, and resilient society.
